Selank

Overview

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide analogue of the endogenous immunomodulatory tetrapeptide tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg), developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Its sequence (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) incorporates a C-terminal tripeptide extension that confers metabolic stability and extended duration of action compared to native tuftsin.

Selank's mechanism of action is thought to involve modulation of GABA-A receptor activity and upregulation of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) expression, contributing to its anxiolytic and memory-enhancing effects in preclinical models. Notably, it does not appear to produce sedation, muscle relaxation, or the tolerance profiles characteristic of benzodiazepine-class compounds.
